Report by the ACLU that states "The Legal System Has Failed Black Girls, Women, and Non-Binary Survivors of Violence.
Studies have shown that Black girls, women, and non-binary people are hyper-vulnerable to abuse. About 22 percent of Black women in the United States have experienced rape, and Black women are killed at a higher rate than any other group of women. A 2015 survey of Black trans and non-binary individuals found that 53 percent have experienced sexual violence, and 56 percent have experienced domestic violence."

Important updates about Senator Alvarado-Gil's work to advocate for victims of sexual assault. Senator has been very open about sharing her own story as a survivor. She brings her lived experiences to the Capitol with a determination to close the loopholes that inhibit justice.
One of the first bills she introduced after being sworn in was SB268, legislation that would make rape of an unconscious person a violent felony. Through persistence, she was able to defy the odds and help carry this bill to successfully pass out of the Senate Public Safety Committee and Senate floor with unanimous support.
Now we are facing another hurdle to pass through the Assembly Public Safety Committee which will have a hearing and vote on June 27th. Senator is asking for our community to come out with broad support, especially from women, at this hearing if at all possible. The committee will only be accepting in person comments/testimony which we know is not an easy ask, especially for those of us who live a considerable distance from Sacramento. That said, we know that bringing a face and voice to this cause is too important not to show up.
It would mean so much to have the support of your networks at the Capitol on June 27th. Additionally, we would greatly appreciate it if you could share this information with others who may feel connected to this issue, including fellow advocates and survivors.
For this committee they will NOT be doing phone testimony, only in person
If you need assistance with transportation or travel, we can discuss the possibility of assisting. Additionally, attached you will find a fact sheet on SB268 as well as a letter of support from HAVEN Women's Center who has been a strong supporter of this legislation.
